Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius was a Roman Emperor (161–180 AD) and a Stoic philosopher. His private journal, known as Meditations, is one of the most important texts in Stoic philosophy. Written entirely during military campaigns, the book records his personal discipline for maintaining emotional control, rationality, and virtue under extreme pressure — plague, war, betrayal, and the daily chaos of ruling an empire. He focused on the dichotomy of control: what is up to us (judgment, will) and what is not (body, reputation, wealth).

Who was Marcus Aurelius?
A Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher who wrote Meditations, a personal guide to emotional control and rational living.
What is the core of Stoicism according to him?
The dichotomy of control: focus entirely on what you control (your judgments, actions, will) and ignore what you do not (everything else).
How does one maintain emotional control under pressure?
By observing impressions objectively ("This is a bad event" vs. "This is an event. My judgment makes it bad") and refusing to react automatically.
What is "the view from above"?
A meditation technique: imagining your life, city, country, and planet from a cosmic perspective to reduce the significance of petty anxieties.
What did he say about fear of death?
"Death is a natural process, a part of nature's plan. You have seen the present; you have seen all things, from eternity, and will see forever."
What is the role of reason?
Reason (the Logos) is the fundamental nature of the universe. To live rationally is to align your will with nature, which eliminates frustration and anger.
How did he handle betrayal?
He would remind himself that the person acted out of ignorance of good/evil, and that they are part of his "brotherhood" (universal humanity).
What is the "inner citadel"?
The rational mind that can remain free and untouched even when the body is imprisoned, tortured, or dying.
Did he believe in a god?
He believed in a providential nature (pantheism), but his ethics work even for atheists because they are based on logic.
What is his most famous quote?
"You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength."
